Welcome to Task Force 9

For millennia, the Dominion dominated thousands of planets across a vast region of the Gamma Quadrant, bringing absolute order at the price of freedom. However, all this changed in 2375. Following a harrowing defeat by an alliance of Alpha Quadrant powers, the Dominion withdrew behind its own borders to nurse its wounds, its fleets severely weakened by the long war and its leaders having faced near eradication by a mutagenic plague.

Twelve years have now passed since the Dominion went into relative isolation and released its hold over the Gamma Quadrant. Areas that endured a thousand years of subjugation by the Dominion must now fend for themselves. However, freedom does not always come easily, and the region is now plagued by rising and falling governments, ever shifting alliances and a slew of enterprising marauders, all looking to take advantage of the tenuous situation for their own interests.

The Treaty of Bajor drawn up at the conclusion of the Dominion War designated the Bajoran wormhole as a neutral transport hub between the two quadrants and granted use to all parties for exploration, research and trade. For the Federation and other Alpha Quadrant powers, this development has ushered in a period of excitement, opening a new realm of possibilities. Nearly every Alpha Quadrant race has sent expeditions into this new frontier, and, year after year, trade has increased exponentially between the quadrants. As such, the Gamma Quadrant of 2387 can be described as one of the most multicultural regions of the galaxy, teeming with both indigenous groups and new arrivals, each and every one looking to lay a claim in the region.

Outside of official exploration, the Gamma Quadrant has also seen a massive inflow of people who see it as a chance for a brighter future. While the Treaty of Bajor expressly forbids the Alpha Quadrant powers from laying territorial claims in the Gamma Quadrant, civilians have still flocked into the region hoping for a new start, taking up residence on uninhabited worlds and forming non-aligned communes. For a lucky few, dreams for a better life have been realized. However, for many, this hope has transformed into a desperate struggle for survival because, despite its splendor, the Gamma Quadrant is far from safe as ambitious governors, vicious warlords, pirate armadas and criminal syndicates all try to take advantage of the vacuum left by the Dominion withdrawal.

In order to protect Federation interests, Starfleet Command has authorized the deployment of a task force to the Gamma Quadrant. Under the command of Rear Admiral Brianna Avery, the Fourth Fleet’s Task Force 9 has a multi-faceted mandate from ranging from exploration and research to diplomacy and defense.

While the Treaty of Bajor granted unfettered passage through the wormhole, it also reinforced the Jankata Accord, restricting those using the wormhole for passage from territorial expansion into the Gamma Quadrant or vice versa. As such, while a number of Federation vessels operate in the region, Starfleet has only one colony in the quadrant: New Bajor, which was established by the Bajorans before they were admitted into the Federation and thus was not subject to the Jankata Accord. As such, New Bajor has become the center of Federation activity in the quadrant, both for civilians and as the base of operations for Task Force 9. In addition to the colony, Starfleet has also set up several communication arrays, research stations and small supply outposts, but many of these have struggled in the disorderly and hostile nature of the region.

Task Force 9 offers a wide variety of missions in a new area of space that only the most courageous, dedicated, and bold members of Starfleet dare take part in.
